Langdale stone axes
When Professor Bill Cummins examined nearly 2000 Neolithic axes from finds all over England and Wales, he found that 27% were made from polished volcanic tuff from Great Langdale in Cumbria.
Some show signs of wear, but many show no wear at all.
Some seem to have been buried with the dead.
Oddest of all, some were placed in watery ground, a common ‘sacrificial’ practice in prehistoric Britain.
